Dressage - Rein Back
Rein Back is where the horse takes long, well defined and straight steps backwards whilst remaining attentive and on the bit.
Uses
Rein Back helps to engage the horses hindquarters and help the horse to remain attentive to the aids. Rein Back can be found in Grand Prix dressage tests and reining competitions and also with the higher levels of eventing during the dressage phase of the competition.
Aids For Rein Back
- The horse should be suitably warmed up and working consistantly on the bit during school movements and lateral work.

- The rider asks the horse for a square halt preferably along a wall or fence to assist the horse to stay straight during the steps.
- The rider rolls their seat slightly forward and lightens the weight in their seat so that more weight is distributed onto the riders inner thighs. By taking some of the riders weight off the horses back the horse will be able to remain free and flexible through their back allowing the steps to be long and free.
- Both of the riders legs apply pressure behind the girth.
- Both reins apply direct pressure on the bit to prevent the horse from moving forwards, however the reins are not to be used to pull the horse the horse back merely to restrict forward motion.
