Sidebone
This is where ossification (bone formation) of the cartilage around the Pedal or coffin bone occurs.

Causes

• Excessive concussion on hard ground.
  
• Poor conformation that leads to concussive problems.
  
• Poor shoeing.
  
• Direct trauma.

Horses at risk
Are those with toe in/out conformation and heavy draught horses.

Symptoms

• Bony enlargements can be felt just above the coronary band.
  
• In some cases there is lameness.
  
• Shortness in the horses stride.

Treatment

• Box rest.
  
• Anti inflammatory drugs.
  
• Correctative shoeing can help in some cases.
