Ringworm
This is a fungal infection that causes small round patches to form on the skin surface. Ringworm is also known as Tinea.
Symptoms
- Small circular patches of skin are infected with raised spots which over time become scabs, these are often seen around the horses head and neck and will rapidly spread if left untreated.
- The patches of ringworm can be quite sore for the horse.
- The patches of ringworm can often be Itchy.
- The circular patches of ringworm often suffer from hair loss.
Causes
Ringworm is caused by a Fungal infection which affects the skin of the horse, these fungi are called dermatophytes. Ringworm can be easily passed on from one horse to another through direct contact or through contact via rugs, stables and fencing etc.
Treatment
- The handler must wear gloves when treating ringworm to help avoid the spread to other horses and to themselves.
- Remove any loose hair and scabs.
- Then wash the area thoroughly with a Anti fungal shampoo.
- Once dry apply a Anti fungal preparation.
- Prevent horse from having contact with any others to avoid the ringworm spreading and wash all rugs, stables and grooming equipment thoroughly.
