Points of the Horse

The Head

  • Ears - At the very top of the head.
  • Poll - Area inbetween the ears.
  • Forelock - Front part of the mane which comes through the ears.
  • Eyes - Found on either side of the face.
  • Nose - Area surrounding the nostrils.
  • Nostrils - On either side of the nose.
  • Forehead - Area above the eyes and below the ears.
  • Whiskers - Surrounding the nose, muzzle and chin.
  • Jaw - The underside of the head.
  • Chin - Underneath the jaw, just below the mouth.
  • Mouth - At the base of the face.
  • Cheek - At the side of the face.

Forelimb

  • Shoulder - Area that runs upwards from the forearm across the body.
  • Forearm - Very upper part of the limb
  • Elbow - To the rear of the uppermost part of the forearm.
  • Knee - Approximately half way down the forearm.
  • Cannon Bone - In-between the Knee and the Fetlock.
  • Tendons - They run down the back of the Cannon.
  • Splint Bone - They run down the side of the Cannon.
  • Fetlock - Situated at the base of the Cannon Bone.
  • Long Pastern - Just below the Fetlock.
  • Short Pastern - Just below the Long Pastern.
  • Heels - At the back of the limb, just below the Fetlock.
  • Coronet - Area around the very top of the Hoof.
  • Hooves - The very lower part of the horses foot.
  • Ergot - Situated at the back of the Fetlock.
  • Chestnut - Situated on the inside of the foreleg, just above the knee.

Hindlimb

  • Quarters - Area around the back and side of the horse
  • Stifle - Area of hindleg situated at the base of the Flank
  • Thigh - Upper part of the hindlimb that sits just behind the Stifle.
  • Flank - At the side of the horse between the Stifle and the Croup.
  • Gaskin - Also called the 2nd Thigh, situated above the hock and leading into the Thigh.
  • Point of Hock - The uppermost part of the Hock Joint.
  • Hock - Found in between the Gaskin and the Cannon Bone.
  • Chestnut - Situated on the inside of the leg just below the hock.
  • Cannon Bone - Area that runs down from the Hock to the Fetlock.
  • Splint Bone - Run down the inside and outside of the Cannon Bone.
  • Tendons - Run down the very back of the limb.
  • Fetlock - Area at the base of the Cannon Bone and above the Pasterns.
  • Heels - At the back of the Pasterns and below the Fetlock.
  • Coronet - Area that runs around the top of the Hooves.
  • Ergots - Found at the very back of the Fetlock Joint.
  • Hooves - Situated at the bottom of the lower leg.
 

Top line

  • Neck - Area that runs from the head to the shoulders.
  • Crest - Runs along the very top of the neck.
  • Mane - Hair that comes down from the crest.
  • Withers - Raised area that is situated between the back and the crest of the top line.
  • Back - Area that is found between the withers and the loins.
  • Loins - Just behind the Back and before the Croup.
  • Croup - Area between the Loins and the Dock.
  • Dock - At the top of the Tail.
  • Tail - Hair that grows down from the Dock.

Body

  • Chest - Area at the very front of the horse at the base of the neck above the forearms.
  • Rib cage - Situated along the side of the horse
  • Girth - Area just behind the Elbow on the horses side.
  • Barrel - On the horses side in between the forelimb and hindlimb.
  • Sheath - Situated on the underside of the Flank.
  • Flank - Area that runs up from the Stifle, just behind the Ribs.
